When Do Summer Internship Applications Open in Europe?

Updated September 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Summer analyst applications do not open evenly through the year. In July 2026, summer roles were 3.8% of all European finance postings Fyntraq detected. One month later they were 11.3%, and 13.6% by mid September. Here is the curve, and the method behind it.

The pattern

When the season actually starts

Most published advice tells candidates that European summer analyst applications open in the autumn. That is broadly right, and too vague to act on. The question that matters is when the volume arrives, because summer programmes at most firms are reviewed on a rolling basis and close once the cohort fills.

Measured across the nine European markets Fyntraq tracks, the inflection is August. The share of European finance postings that are summer roles triples between July and August, from 3.8% to 11.3%, then keeps climbing through September.

June 2026

July 2026
3.8%45 postings
August 2026
11.3%156 postings
September 2026
13.6%183 postings

September 2026 is measured to the 16th only, so its posting count is a half month. Its share is not, because a share does not depend on how long the month ran. The number of distinct firms posting summer roles moves the same way as the share: 9 in June, 19 in July, 45 in August, 48 in the first half of September.

Method

How this was measured

We publish the method because the headline number is easy to get wrong, and we got it wrong on the first pass ourselves.

  • What is counted. Postings classified as summer analyst programmes in Fyntraq's contract taxonomy, in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. Not a keyword match on job titles.
  • What the date means. The month a posting was first detected on a firm career site or job board. Detection runs continuously, so for most firms this sits close to the real opening date, but it is not a published opening date and we do not present it as one.
  • Why a share, not a count. Fyntraq's own coverage grew over the period. A raw count of detections would partly measure our crawler rather than the market. The share of all European postings that are summer roles is a ratio, so coverage growth cancels out of it. Both figures are shown above.
  • Why the series starts in June. Earlier months are not comparable. Fyntraq was migrating its contract taxonomy, and 66% of postings first seen in March, along with 32% in April, still carried legacy labels that could never be classified as a summer programme. A share computed over those months is mechanically depressed, which would overstate the rise. From June onward the taxonomy is uniform across every posting, so the four months shown are measured on identical terms.
  • When it was measured. September 16, 2026. The figures in this section are a frozen snapshot and will not change without a dated revision. The live list further down is separate and refreshes continuously.

Two limitations worth stating plainly. This is a single season of data: it shows where the volume sat in 2026, it is not yet a multi-year trend, and we will not describe it as one until we have measured a second cycle. And four months is a short window, so the August step is the finding here, not the precise slope.

Geography

Which markets have the most roles

The United Kingdom is the largest single market, as expected. The figure candidates tend to underestimate is the continent: France and Germany together carry more open summer postings than the United Kingdom on its own, across a comparable number of firms.

United Kingdom
957268 firms
France
612181 firms
Germany
592205 firms
Netherlands
13462 firms
Spain
11769 firms
Switzerland

Italy
9856 firms

These are open postings of every contract type at September 16, 2026, which is why the totals are larger than the monthly summer counts above. They show where the hiring is, not when it opened.

Practical

What this means if you are applying

Three things follow from the curve above.

  • Be ready before August, not during it. If your CV is still being written when the volume arrives, you spend the densest four weeks of the cycle writing rather than applying, against a rolling review.
  • The quiet months are the ones people miss. June and July still produced 88 postings across these markets, scattered across 9 then 19 firms. Thin and scattered is exactly the pattern that defeats checking a few career pages by hand.
  • Do not restrict yourself to London by default. Paris and Frankfurt carry substantial volume, and the continental boutiques and asset managers posting there are covered far less consistently by other trackers.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When do summer internship applications open in Europe?

Across the nine European markets Fyntraq tracks, summer analyst postings cluster in August and September. Summer roles made up 3.7% of all European finance postings detected in June 2026, 3.8% in July, 11.3% in August and 13.6% in the first half of September. A number of firms open earlier, which is why the tracker runs continuously rather than on a seasonal schedule.

Does that mean there is nothing worth watching before August?

No. June and July still produced 88 summer postings across the same markets, spread across 9 and then 19 firms. They are scattered rather than concentrated, which is exactly the pattern candidates miss when they check a handful of career pages by hand.

Is this the date applications open, or the date you found them?

It is the date Fyntraq first detected the posting on a firm career site or job board. For most firms the two are close, because detection runs continuously rather than weekly. It is not a published opening date, and we do not present it as one.

Why show a percentage rather than a count?

Because a count would partly measure our own coverage rather than the market: Fyntraq added career sites over the period. The share of postings that are summer roles is a ratio, so that growth cancels out. The raw counts are shown alongside for transparency.

Why does the data start in June rather than January?

Because earlier months are not comparable. Fyntraq was migrating its contract taxonomy, and 66% of postings first seen in March, plus 32% in April, still carried legacy labels that could never be classified as a summer programme. Including them would depress the early figures and overstate the rise. From June onward the taxonomy is uniform, so the months shown are measured on identical terms.

Which European markets does this cover?

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. The United Kingdom is the largest by volume, but France and Germany together account for more open summer postings than the United Kingdom alone.
