About the job

About 1936

1936 is a global sports, media and entertainment (“SME”) investment and operating platform, backed by some of the world’s leading family offices. We invest in the businesses, properties and IP shaping the future of the category, and work alongside the teams and founders we back to build long-term value. We bring elite athletic experience together with operational expertise and institutional-grade investment capability across the sports commercial landscape. We are investors, operators and advisors at the intersection of capital, brands and talent, and we operate everywhere sport creates value.

We deploy capital deal-by-deal across private equity, growth and venture in sport, media, entertainment, adjacent technology and sport-native consumer, alongside aligned capital partners.

The Role

1936 is seeking an Associate to join the 1936 investment team in London. This is a pure investment role, focused on M&A and direct investment across sports, media and entertainment. You will report directly to Charlie Raposo, Founder and CEO, working closely with the wider senior team.

From day one you will see every opportunity that comes through 1936. That includes club and team stakes, league and rights deals, sports-adjacent and picks and shovels businesses, venture opportunities and co-investments alongside institutional partners.

You will be part of the strategic direction and decision making of the 1936 investment team, refining our approach and thesis as the market evolves. You will work with key stakeholders across the SME landscape.

1936 is a small and dynamic team, and you will be one of the early hires in the company as we expand our dealmaking capacity. You will own workstreams end to end, sit in the room with founders, owners and capital partners, and have a direct line into how investment decisions are made.

You will be exposed to all ends of the SME value chain, and your job is to get up to speed fast, form high conviction on deals, read the ecosystem, and do what it takes to make a good opportunity actionable.

What you will do

  • Pipeline ownership. Track and triage all inbound and proprietary deal flow. Build a working view on every live opportunity and keep the pipeline current.
  • Sourcing. Work alongside the CEO and senior leadership team to source new proprietary opportunities for 1936.
  • Financial modelling and underwriting. Build LBO, DCF and return analysis. Analyse historical financials, project cashflows and run scenario and sensitivity analysis to assess risk and relative value.
  • Due diligence. Run diligence workstreams from first look to close. Prepare diligence questions, manage data rooms, and coordinate with legal, tax and third-party advisors.
  • Investment recommendations. Draft investment memos and committee materials. Make sure every recommendation is accurate, complete and has a clear point of view.
  • Structuring and execution. Support SPV formation and structuring, term negotiation and legal documentation alongside co-investors and counsel.
  • Research and market mapping. Build sector knowledge across sports, media and entertainment. Map new verticals, track valuations and transactions, and turn macro trends into investable ideas.
  • Portfolio support. Monitor existing positions and support value creation across the portfolio.
  • Travel. Attend events, meetings and assets where the deals are. Sport happens in person, and so does a lot of our business.

What we are looking for

Required

  • 2 to 4+ years in investment banking, private equity, growth equity, late stage venture capital or private credit. Pre-MBA and post-MBA candidates are both welcome.
  • Strong technical skills. You can build an LBO and complex operating models from scratch.
  • Highly proficient in Excel and comfortable presenting analysis to senior counterparts.
  • Excellent research, diligence and writing skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent with a strong academic record.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Willingness to travel.

Strongly preferred

  • Transaction experience in SME or TMT.
  • A genuine point of view on where value is being created in sport, and where it is not.

How you work

  • Driven and self-motivated. 1936 is a small team, culture is important and travel is frequent. You need to thrive in a fast moving, dynamic and high stakes environment.
  • Self-directed and comfortable with autonomy, able to prioritise across several live deals at once.
  • Commercially sharp, with strong organisational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Great people skills and a natural team player.
  • Impeccable integrity, trustworthiness and discretion.

A plus

  • Other languages.
  • Exposure to deals across the capital structure, from debt to common equity.

Why 1936

  • Breadth from day one. You see every deal, not a slice of one. Clubs, leagues, motorsport, sailing, media and venture all cross your desk.
  • Proximity to decisions. You work directly with the Founder and CEO and sit alongside owners, operators and capital partners.
  • An operator’s view of sport. We work across investment, brands, talent and experiences, so you see how value is actually created on the ground, not just on a spreadsheet.
  • Room to grow. We are building the team now. The right person grows with the platform.

Location: London. Hybrid and flexible working to begin.

Timing: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the role is filled.

How to apply: 1.

  • Your CV. 2.
  • A cover letter, no more than two pages, giving your point of view on the sports investment ecosystem and the sports industry. Tell us where you think value is being created, where the market is getting it wrong, and what kind of deals you would want to do. We care more about the quality of your thinking than your conclusions. 3.
  • Include in your cover letter: your favourite sporting moment, and why.
